Most people looking at this website would probably agree that a visit to a historic monument can be great fun.  However, a few simple preparations can improve anyone's visit.

Although we strive to open the castle on the days and times published here on our website, we sometimes are faced with circumstances beyond our control.  A good example is severe weather such as heavy snow.  Another less obvious example can be local electrical failures which may result in the unexpected closure of the Keep tower.

We would always recommend that before setting off to visit Conisbrough Castle, you should give us a call on 01709 863329 just to make sure that we are open; we usually are, but sometimes we have to close the site for unanticipated reasons.

Conisbrough Castle is mostly an out-door attraction, subject to all that the outside world has to offer.  In order to thoroughly enjoy your visit, please dress appropriately. Good footwear, warm clothing, a hat and rain coat will all be useful, even if they are only sitting in the car.

A visit to any historic monument can be made more enjoyable with a little previous research or by purchasing the guide book when you buy your admission tickets.  So many visitors to Conisbrough Castle march from the Visitor Centre to the top of the Keep as quickly as they possibly can, missing on the way all the little and large clues that tell us about what was once here.  With a little thought and preparation a quick 20 minute dash can easily become 2 to 3 hour journey of discovery and wonder.

On hot sunny summer days why not consider bringing a picnic lunch, and don't forget the sun screen.

King George V at Conisbrough Castle July 1912There are so many other activities that can be carried out at Conisbrough Castle in conjunction with your visit; good examples are walking and cycling (either as a destination or starting point), painting and drawing, bird watching, meeting with friends or family, photography, the study of wild flowers (parts of the castle grounds are an SSI), creative writing, sun bathing, the list is only limited by your imagination.

Don't forget to bring your camera, and don't forget to charge the batteries.

A small torch is useful for looking into dark and interesting places.

Ask questions, if there is something you don't understand or would like to know.  Our staff are only too happy to answer.
